Sample (Verbatim) Attendee Reviews

"I'll head back to work renewed and with more purpose than ever to produce client-effective advertising based on the tenets learned here. A much needed recharge for me as a production director. I'll be back next year!"
- Mike O'Neil, Westcoast Broadcasting

"I heard another attendee say their station almost didn't send them because of budget reasons. This Summit should be a budget priority, because it definitely can help the station make more money for their clients...and consequently for themselves."
- Dan Ratcliffe, WFSH

"I can't wait to take this stuff home. I fully expect the quality of our spots and the sound of our station to improve over the next year with the techniques I've learned this weekend."
- Mark Tucker, Standard Radio

"This was the first event I've attended that really got down to real-life radio issues. I can't wait to get back to work!"
- Karen Bishop, KWPZ

Here Are the Ten Information-Packed Sessions that You'll Hear Just as They Happened.

UNLOCKING THE MYSTERY OF ADVERTISING
Presenters: Dick Orkin & Christine Coyle

WORLD PREMIERE!

A sad truth: Most advertising is a waste of the client's money.

Dick Orkin & Chris Coyle open the door and personally lead you across the threshold to advertising that works — how to conceive your ad strategy, write the spot or campaign, and produce & direct the commercial itself.

At any other conference, this would be the "keynote event." But it was just the opening act at this year's Summit!

CHARACTER ACTING MASTERS
Special Guests: Nancy Cartwright, Gary Owens, Fred Willard

For nearly two full hours, three of Hollywood's most celebrated character performers share with you the secrets of their success.

Nancy Cartwright: If you have toddlers, you're probably familiar with a wonderful TV show called Rugrats. Nancy provides the voice of Chuckie. That would be impressive enough. But you probably know her better as the voice of... Bart Simpson. (And guess what? Nancy began her career in radio.)

Gary Owens: A true legend. One of the few persons to have been inducted both into the Radio Hall of Fame and the Television Hall of Fame. Veteran of hundreds of TV shows, numerous movies, and tens thousands of commercial voiceovers & animation performances. (Note to our British customers: Gary was a major influence on Kenny Everett.)

Fred Willard: Although Fred does lots of commercial work, he's universally hailed as one of the world's most brilliant improvisational comic actors. (For my money, he's the absolute best.) Whether in This is Spinal Tap, Waiting for Guffman, Best in Show, A Mighty Wind, etc., Fred creates hysterically funny characters that somehow remain so real that we recognize them from people we've met in our own lives.

This was a very special, once-in-a-lifetime session.

LOST & FOUND
Presenter: Dan O'Day

In this audio-intensive session, Dan O'Day shares a variety of commercials & promos he's gathered from around the world during the previous year — 53 in all...

...offering precise, specific comments on each that point out their strengths and weaknesses.

You'll be furiously scribbling down ideas to use for your campaigns...and perhaps occasionally cringing as Dan criticizes some spots for weaknesses that you'll recognize from your own work

COPYWRITING SECRETS & VOICE ACTING SHORTCUTS
Presenter: Dan O'Day & Christine Coyle
WORLD PREMIERE!

First Dan O'Day will teach you three brand-new techniques for writing fresh, original copy...fast. (You'll hear some amazing commercials written by the attendees during this exercise).

Then Christine Coyle will show you how to make the performance of your copy (whether by you or by others) much more powerful. This is as "real world" and "hands on" as it gets.

USING MUSIC IN COMMERCIALS: LEGAL vs. ILLEGAL
Presenter: Dan O'Day

Have you ever found yourself engaged in an unpleasant, frustrating disagreement with a client or colleague over how music can legally be used in commercial production?

Fact: Most radio stations unknowingly break the law every day. Unfortunately, "not knowing it was illegal" is not a valid defense.

This is the session you'll want to share with your entire Sales and Creative staffs... because it can save you hundreds of thousands of dollars.

HOW TO WRITE 100% ORIGINAL COPY
Presenter: Dan O'Day

You're on a deadline (say, 30 minutes from now).

You've been given nothing to work with...

...and you're expected to come up with a campaign for a client in an overexposed product category known for cookie-cutter commercials.

Here's a simple, powerful 10-minute exercise that will guarantee you 100% original commercial copy.

You'll hear the results for yourself, as the entire group works together in this fast, fun (but seriously valuable) session!

CREATING, SUSTAINING & GROWING RADIO CHARACTERS
Special Guest: Gary Burbank

Gary Burbank is a genuine radio genius.

He does more things brilliantly than anyone else we know...including writing and producing comedy of the highest level on a daily basis.

This session delves into Gary's own methods of developing characters that are funny, original, and distinctive. (One of them ran for President of the United States... and got 16,000 votes!)

An in-depth look at the work of one of the greatest talents ever to sit behind a microphone.

CRITIQUE-A-SPOT-A-THON
(Dick Orkin, Dan O'Day & Christine Coyle)

A Summit Tradition! Attendees bring to the Summit commercials or promos that they wrote or produced.

Then Dick Orkin, Dan O'Day & Christine Coyle cheerfully tear them apart...and offer specific, concrete suggestions on how they might be improved.

You'll get to hear the work of your peers, learn from others' mistakes, and be inspired by some terrific work of your colleagues.

WHEN YOU KNOW YOUR CHARACTERS, YOU CAN FOLLOW THEM ANYWHERE
Presenter: Gary Burbank, Christine Coyle, Dick Orkin

Most radio people think of "characters" as funny voices saying or doing funny things.

But when you've developed original, distinctive characters, those characters don't need jokes to be funny.

Just put them in any situation and the characters will find the humor that is appropriate (for the sponsor, the radio station, or the program).

One attendee described it best: "The Advertising version of 'Whose Line Is It, Anyway!'"

Completely impromptu and unrehearsed!

NO-HOLDS BARRED, ANYTHING GOES QUESTION & ANSWER FREE-FOR-ALL
Gary Burbank, Christine Coyle, Dan O'Day, Dick Orkin

Each year's Summit leaves attendees' minds spinning with new ideas, tools, techniques and philosophies...So many that it can be dizzying.

That's why for the first time ever, we ended the Summit by fielding any & all questions from the attendees - undoubtedly including some of the same questions that you would have asked, if only you'd been there!

12 Compact Discs (nearly 14 hours!)
plus SUMMIT 2003 CD Binder
